3 Indian and 7 Nepalese girls saved from trafficking in Kenya, says Sushma Swaraj on Twitter
Three girls of Indian origin and seven girls from Nepal were held hostage in Mombasa, Kenya, by a major organised crime unit recently. The crime unit deals with human trafficking. With their mobile phones and passports taken away, they had no way of escaping the clutches of the criminals. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs, however announced on Twitter that all the girls have been rescued and are on their way back to their homelands.
The minister said,
We have rescued three Indian girls from Kenya. The girls were victims of an organised crime syndicate that indulged in trafficking of girls. Seven Nepalese girls were also rescued. Their Passports and phones were taken and they were held captive in Mombasa. We have flown our girls back to India. We are sharing details with Government of Punjab so that a case is registered against the agents and people involved.
According to an Indian Express report, the minister once said,
We have increased the speed of processing of documents, have made our ministry’s face more humane, and efficiency of services has improved significantly.
Sushma Swaraj is well known for coming to the rescue of Indian citizens stranded abroad and this isn't the first time the minister is being admired for her work. Back in February, when Charanya Kannan, an Indian student at Harvard Business School had gone to Tanzania to pursue a course on private-public partnerships, she was robbed by a bike thief and lost her mobile phone, cash, credit cards, driver's license, and worst of all, her passport.
When Charanya approached the Indian Embassy in Tanzania, she was told, 'You tweet to anyone. Let's see what they can do. What will they do? They will tell us to do and again we only do it. You tweet to anyone, Let's see what you can do'. Soon enough, it was Sushma Swaraj who responded to Charanya in a series of tweets and consequently rescued the girl.
