Union Minister for Water Resources and Rejuvenation of Ganga Uma Bharti said that the Centre would replicate the model of Holy Kali Bein, an important rivulet in Punjab, to clean river Ganga. Talking to media persons after visiting the holy site at Sultanpurlodhi, Uma Bharti said she was impressed to see the cleanliness work done by renowned environmentalist Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal with the help of peoples’ participation. She appreciated the sewerage system of the village and the use of treated water for irrigation purposes. Baba Seechewal took her for a ride in the holy rivulet in a motorboat and showed her the cleanliness work of the Holy Bein near Gurdwara Ber Sahib. She said that Holy Bein cleanliness has showed her the way to clean river Ganga. Bharti claimed that the final draft for the cleanliness of Ganga river has been approved in the meeting of Cabinet secretary on May 13 this year.

She announced that she would undertake ‘Padyatra’ in October along Ganga river to spread awareness and also hold a meeting with sarpanches of 1,619 villages soon to seek their cooperation in the cleanliness of the river. Expressing deep concern over the depleting water table in Punjab and Haryana, she said Centre would prepare an action plan to recharge the ground water of both the states and other parts of the country.
