How a former thief from Karnataka mended his ways and started fighting for shelter for the homeless
Shigli Basyaa, an infamous thief in Karnataka has turned over a new leaf. A thief with a history of looting over 250 houses spanning over four decades, Basyaa is now fighting a cause for the homeless. Basyaa, who has been in and out of jail numerous times is also visiting all the houses he looted, on foot, to ask for forgiveness. Already having covered a distance of over 450 km, Basyaa has been walking with a tricolour and a rucksack.
In a report by The Times Of India, Basyaa is in Bengaluru’s Freedom Park since Thursday, demanding shelter for homeless people. The change of heart occurred when he visited his father’s home in Shigli village after being released from jail. He found that more than 2.3 acres of land were taken away by his brothers and he was not given his due share. He protested, after which the gram panchayat agreed to provide a house for him.
On seeing the locals protest against the gram panchayat’s decision to grant a home to him, Basyaa decided to take up the cause of all homeless people and decided to fight for their right to shelter.
