“Under the initiative, one lakh school children (from class 4-10) will be involved in writing and sending letters hand written by them to one lakh employees, appealing them to adapt an alternative and public transportation at least once a week,” said Visahala Reddy, Founder Director of IdentCITY, who conceptualised both ‘Car-Free-Thursday’ campaign and ‘One Lakh Hands’ initiative.

This will be a triangle communication between the child to the parent to employee and will have a direct outreach of 5 lakh people and 10 times bigger outreach through various channels of media. “As part of this, we are also introducing a school band, which will perform in IT companies,” she said.

‘One Lakh Hands’, is a social innovation platform designed by IdentCITY being implemented with the support of the partners who include Transport Department of Telangana, Telangana State Pollution Control Board, HYSEA and several other organisations. “The topic for the letters include traffic congestion, road for all, road safety, vehicle pollution, unnecessary honking. Children can also express their wish by songs and poems,” the organisers said.

Telangana Joint Transport Commissioner B Venkateswarlu sai, “The department has come forward to strengthen these initiatives. There are 40 lakh vehicles plying under GHMC limits and it is high time there should be judicious optimum use of our private vehicles,” he said. ‘Car-Free-Thursday’ campaign was launched in the IT corridor on August 6 to encourage IT/ITeS sector employees to use public transport, carpools, cycles and walk to work and “free up” space.
