These smart teeth can detect bacteria, cavities and even stomach cancer
Think about a kind of a temporary tattoo which sticks on you teeth, detects bacteria, plaque buildup, cavities or infection; informs your dentist and puts you under the added social pressure to meet him. Well, this is exactly the future being invented by scientists at Princeton and Tufts.
According to Princeton’s own news site, these researchers have used silk strands pulled from cocoons and gold wires thinner than a spider’s web, to create a removable tattoo that adheres to dental enamel and could eventually monitor a patient’s health with unprecedented sensitivity.
According to Tufts website, the sensor may have wide-ranging use. The researchers, including Manu Mannoor and Michael McAlpine have already used it to identify bacteria in saliva associated with stomach ulcers and cancers. Gerard Kugel, a professor associated with Tufts School of Dental Medicine, said “The mouth is a window to the rest of the body,” Kugel says. “You can spot a lot of potential health problems through saliva, and it’s a much less invasive way to do diagnostic tests than drawing blood.”
